Questions about Lingual Braces

What does the term 'Lingual orthodontics' mean?

The word 'lingual' is derived from the Latin meaning 'tongue' and is used because the orthodontic appliance is placed on the back surface (the surface facing the tongue) of the tooth. Lingual orthodontics refers to the correction of malaligned teeth by means of braces fixed to the inner side of the teeth so as to be concealed from view. These braces are the only truly 'invisible' orthodontic appliances.

What orthodontic problems can be corrected with lingual orthodontics?

Virtually every type of orthodontic malalignment can be treated with Lingual braces. Whereas removable appliances such as 'Invisalign' allow only simple, minor tooth movements in adult teeth, even extreme problems can be corrected with fixed lingual orthodontics. [ Lingual Braces Comparison ]

Is there an age limit for lingual orthodontics?

There is no age limit. As long as gum tissues are healthy and sufficient permanent teeth are available patients of all ages can be treated with fixed lingual appliances. Removable appliances such as 'Invisalign' are only for use on adult teeth.

Does it take longer to treat with these appliances and what is the quality of the results?

It takes no longer than with conventional appliances and the results are as outstanding.

Will the lingual braces interfere with eating or speech?

Any new appliance, wherever it is placed, will feel foreign and some time will be necessary to adapt. With lingual braces, instead of the lips being affected (as with labial braces), the tongue in particular is affected. In the vast majority of patients the adaptation process takes less than 2 weeks. This is particularly true with the new style lingual brace because of its low profile and 'made to measure' construction.

man "...Visible braces were out of the question for me for professional reasons. Invisible lingual braces were a real alternative for me in my quest to get my teeth properly aligned..."

woman "...After my first orthodontic treatment at the age of 14, my teeth moved out of position again. The second time around, I didn't want braces everyone could see. It took me hardly any time to get used to them on the inner side of my teeth..."
